cheers everyone! I ended up going for this beauty (with a triple)

The thinking was that my other bikes have triples so i'm used to them and figured out the lowest gear in the compact, set the boyfriends bike up for me and what gear that equated to on his bike and had a bash at the biggest hill i could find.....and decided the triple was def the way to go, it was hard work by the time i got to the top!
The bike was just above the budget i wanted to spend but by upping my top budget by £50 got me full 105 groupset rather than a Tiagra/sora mix so well chuffed with it[/url]0 -
Where do you live? I live in very hilly West Yorkshire and use a standard double on my winter bike and a 50/36 on my main bike (changed last year to do Mt Ventoux / sportifs). I like the compact because you change the front ring less often giving a more fluid ride, but manage fine with either. The compact improves your cadence.
One possible solution is to get the Compact and as you get stronger either change the front mech (check with the shop whether this is feasible) or put an 11/23 on the rear (my option).
If you are somewhere flat or rolling a 52 or 53 / 36 will be fine.0
