Which new bike... again

This one could also be titled "Here we go round the round-about"

Except my question has a different angle.

I currently own a 1998 Giant Terrago 25.5" frame with magura hydraulic rim brakes, Alu frame, Alu rims, Shimano 24sp rapid fire gears etc Nice and light... I tried unsuccessfully to upgrade this bike with forks (currently rigid), but couldn't due to the length of the steerer tube... long story.

so, now, with my birthday looming, I am in the market for a replacement. Now, it's worth mentioning I'm a 6'6" ex-rugby player... so not as short and light   as the majority of the MTB fraternity, and am keen to get something strong and good value for money. My research so far shows me that 23" frames seem to be the biggest you get these days... and that Giants (again) seem to be in my price range (£400-450). I mainly ride a mixture of XC (bridleways/byways) and roads, but take in some hills (up and down) as I live in the West country.

So, besides the Terrago Disc/Trail and possibly the XTC 4.5, which other bikes should I be considering and why?

Thanks in advance
Kevin
PS The LBS is a Giant Dealer so that helps... but that's all they stock

This price range has been asked lots of times recently, it would be worthwhile looking for the threads. All have large and XL sizes, and any bike needs to be tested. But to get you started have a look at these:

    GT Avalanche 2.0
    Mongoose Tyax Elite
    Carrera Fury
    Giant Terrago

Thanks for the reply Supersonic, but I was after more of a "I too am 6'6" and have enjoyed riding this xxxx bike" kind of answer...

I have read the other threads and they all say pretty much the same thing without mentioning how well they suit tall/heavier riders.

On top of that, this website's own reviews suggest that some of the bikes you've listed would not be suitable... e.g. of the Carrera Fury this is said...
Even 11-stone riders will get some flex from them
I guess that puts all 6'6" ex-rugby players into the "Clydesdale" category

While you are tall, a most larger bikes should easily be able to cope as geometry is stepped up to meet your needs. You'll probably need around a 22 inch frame I would guess, but testing is the key.

Weight wise, some are built with the heavier rider in mind, but are usually hardcore hardtails or jump bikes that tend to be a little smaller. The Mongoose has a sturdy oversized frame.

Thanks for the follow-up, I'll look at the Mongoose and see how it shapes up against my short list.

Do test the fury though. It has a solid fork and wheelset, and flex varies from rider to rider, and isnt always a bad thing. All you can do is see for yourself. It is asvelte frame though.
