Hi,
Can anyone help, I have a Shimano EXAGE 500LX crankset which is pretty nailed, so I'd like to replace it.

But can I get something that will fit it as I know that particular set must be what 8 years old at least!

Anyone point me in the right direction?

Many thanks

Al

any square axled crankset that works with the axle length that is currently fitted.

Oh and a bit older than 7 years. it was released in '92.

I may be wrong but I'm under the impression that square tapper had two versions and a beefed up version of the interface was launched at that time.
I'm saying this cause I had a shimano 200gs crankset back in '93ish and I bought a new left crank and it went too close to the bb shell. And at the time someone mentioned something about two versions of square taper bb.
Please correct me if I'm wrong... It's been a long time ago and it's making me feel old.
It's hard to remember... Oh no! I got Alzheimer!

So if I can't by the same one what is the best one to buy?

I don't want to spend a fortune - any recommendations?

It won't be easy to find one with the same number of tooth in the rings. Was it a 48-38-28? If you don't mind changing to 42-32-22 you'll have plenty too choose from, but you'll have to lower your mech. If you're going to use the new one the way you've used the exage, wich lasted all this time, a cheap one should do it.
For 48-38-28 you have this: http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=29224 but you should be able to get it much cheaper.
Shimano acera/alivio are nice and cheap aswell.
You might wanna consider buying a BB unit too (5 to 10 quid).

If you're planning on usinng it for serious offroad it's a whole different matter. Go crazy and buy this: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... delID=7251 People say lots of good things about them.

What budget? Similar would be a Shimano Alivio crank.

Well unless I am reading it wrongly mine is 46-36-24.

If I change will it effect the performance?

    Whats a BB unit?

£20 - £40 sounds good to me budget wise (is this enough?)

Would I have to change the rest of my gearing system to suit?

    Thanks

I think the bearings are shot as the whole thing has a slight wobble and the cogs are bent as it shifts around somewhat when I peddle it sometimes rubs on the gear shifter.

ok so the bb (bottom braket) needs replacing.

what condition are the teeth in?

as if you have to replace the bb and the cranks you will be over buget and the ratios will be lower as most compact (read new) are 44/32/22 as standard. other sizes are available but....

The teeth are pretty warn down and un even in size and shape.

I take it lower ratios aren't as good then?

depends on which end. at the front better for climbing at the rear better for speed.

TBH i would get down to the Local Bike Shop and get some advise.
as there are other things that you will need to consider. the front mech will need repositioning and that may require new cables. and the swing may not match the new rings.....

after have ing spoken to the LBS pop back and lets discus it further.

but the cheapest will be new bb and rings.
