Rear mech. hanger

Is it advisable to straighten a bent deraillieur hanger or buy a new one and bin the bent one?

The LBS straightened it a few days back but the gear-shifting seemed to be out again after a recent ride. When I try to fix the shifting issues I get the same outcome as when the hanger was bent.

Also, is it wise to keep a spare rear mech. hanger for just such an occasion?

Well it depends how bad it was bent in the first place. When they bend they normal twist slightly aswell. How good is your LBS, ive seen big adjustable spanners used over the years instead of the correct alignement tool (Park DAG-1 is recommended). Is your rear mech twisted/bent? It only takes a small twist/bend in the mech to give you nightmare gearing.

They're pretty cheap, normally you just put a new one on then don't have to worry about it.

  • Normally if a hanger survives being straightened without breaking it will survive being ridden. However previous comments about twisting are spot on. It depends on the degree of bending / twisting involved. By all means keep a spare hanger in your tool kit, it will probably come in handy one day, and it may not be available from stock at your LBS so better to get one in advance.

A big rock straightened mines out, well enough to free wheel back to the car park (5 miles..). Sadly the mech snapped so couldn't ride back! But yeah, I think i'll be replacing it. Probably would replace it after any bend to it.
