Sole mate...or Sole hate?

My mate recently bought an 07 GT something or other which came equipped with the dreaded Hayes Sole hydros (I'm assuming they're 07).
Both brakes rubbed but the front was easily sorted due to the post mount/IS adapter.
The rear persistently rubs on the non piston side, even when the pad is backed out all the way.
I can't figure out if it's the single magnet holding the pad in place causing it,or what? it always seems to sit at a weird angle.
Weirdly,it's impossible to remove the pads until they've worn a bit, which also makes me wonder how I'm supposed to put new ones in for him when the time comes? They're simply too wide to be removed...presumably,new ones would be too wide to fit.
I've had washers on the go everywhere trying to shift the caliper but to no avail, and the only thing I can think of yet to try is getting the mounts faced?

The piston retracts fine, all the way...the piston side isn't the problem. The brake isn't spongy at all,so I don't think a bleed is the answer.

So,basically, with the non piston side pad backed right out,and despite judicious use of washers this way, that way,and the other way....the non piston side pad is rubbing.

One of you techies help me out, please. This is doing my head in
All I have left as an idea is a mount face...maybe i'm missing something vital??

The rotor is not warped in the slightest..LBS is not an option.

I'm on the verge of upgrading and giving him my HFX 9's for nowt just to be rid of this bloody headache

Regards :D

Its a Post mount brake on an IS adaptor isnt it? Can't you just realign it?
  • No mate,it's an IS mount.
Which suprises me,because I thought all Hayes were post mount. :?:

So did I actually, though some o7 were changed I believe.

Its trial and error I am afraid, and these arent the best discs unfortunately. With the Post mount they were a doddle as you simply wound the fixed pad all the way in, wound it out a mm, loosened adaptor bolts, squeezed brakes, tightened, then wound the fixed pad back in.

If there's nothing wrong with the caliper and it fits the IS disc hangers directly, with no adapters, the problem is solved using shims.
If shims don't work, that's because the mounts aren't aligned for some reason.

It's a new bike, so get it to the shop your friend bought it from.
Facing the mounts will probably solve it, but the bike is new, so there's no reason for you friend to spend money on a problem the bike already had when he bought it.
