Rear Derailer, Shimano/SRAM

I need to replace the rear derailer on the Mrs bike after it was attacked by a twig.
Originally it was fitted with a Shimano Altus unit. I've got a spare SRAM Dual drive knocking around. They're both 8 speed so are they compatible?
I have fitted it but cant get the thing to drop into the smallest gear, so I'm guessing no

what sram mech is it?
if it is a relativly new one then not compatable as the pull ratios are different. you will need a shimano one to work with the shimano mech.
otherwiae just set the stop screws."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

This nasty thing

The jockey wheels are a lot smaller than the old mech, if that makes a difference0 -
that will NOT work with a shimano shifter.
shimano use a 2:1 pull ratio and Sram use a 1:1 pull ratio.
either a new shimano mech or a sram shifter."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
