Right I have now have my bike, so I am about to start commuting to work fortunately I have a locker at work, however what do i wear on the bike? Obviously I don't want to wear my usual cycling garb for commuting as showering/changing facilities are naff. Also I will be riding home at night due to my shifts so I will need lights any recomendations?

Finally I live in the Erdington area of birmingham and will be cycling to Aston can anyone advise of a good route? Alot to ask thanks.

You have two choices of what to wear on the bike for commuting. 1) Work gear 2) Non work gear. If you are going to do 2) then why not usual cycling garb? You're gonna have to get changed somewhere or other! Personally, work gear makes me hot, even over 3 miles into work so I prefer to wear cycling gear and then change in the toilets. I ride 12-15 miles on the way home so cycling gear is pretty much essential then anyway.

Lights, Lumicycle. Expensive but worth it if you ride in the dark alot.

Can't help with routes I'm afraid

lycra colour coded to the bike and matching helmet seems to be quite popular.

I'm the opposite side of town but the council's walking and cycling map is good for identigying routes - they'll post one out if you get in touch (although I recommend phoning rather than email):
