Hi all, Looking to replace the cheap shimano copy's on my bike with a better pair of stoppers. Does anyone know or reccommend a good set of dual pivot that'll reach over a full mudguard? Or how much drop would I need to look for? Looking for something about 105 performance/price range.

Hi there - I have just recently bought the Shimano A550 long reach calipers to replace some unbranded ones on my Trek Pilot.

    I bought these:

Shimano don't do 'groupset' long reach - they just do the two non-series models - the A550 which are tiagra / 105 and the R600 which are ultegra /dura ace standard. I was tempted by the R600s but where the 550's are £39.9 for the pair, the R600's are £39.99 each! - I just couldn't justify the difference.

The A550's are a bit more solid feeling in use and have improved things, althouh not as much of an improvement as when I put koolstop pads on the unbranded ones it has to be said!

they do look a lot better though and provide all the components on my bike with a shimano brand (I put a tiagra chainset and hollowtechII BB at the same time!)

Thanks mate. I might give them a bash. Was planning on just upgrading my brake cartidges to kool stops but the rear brake cable adjuster has sheared off, jamming inside the brake so will just replace them. Where'd you get your kool stops from. Been hunting for the salmon ones for ages but they're like bloody gold dust!!

    I got them from wiggle.

do your current unbranded calipers come with cartridgepads - i.e. - you could just replace the rubber bit?

My new A550's didn't you see - they came with one peice blocks. So I used the cartridge holders from my old unbrandeds with my new shimano calipers an sold the 'new' shimano 105 brake blocks with the old calipers on ebay (which fetched £21! - should have got the R600s!)

Current ones are cartidges. I'll know to keep a hold on them then. Cheers for the heads up!

Shimano R-600s have 57mm reach are are good for 28 and 32mm tyres with mudguards.

If you have a bike that they'll fit you can now get some side pulls made by Tektro that have a reach from 55 to 73mm.These will take a 40mm tyre with a mudguard....

I have the two types of Shimano deep drop twin pivot brakes on my two bikes. The differences are as follows:

The more expensive ones have cartridge pads
The cable adjuster screw is aluminium not plastic
The centre adjust screw has an allen head instead of a crosspoint

    Nothing else is obviously different.
The aluminium brake forgings are exactly the same.

So my advice is to buy the cheaper ones and a good set of brake pads!
