Crank Bros Smartys

Does anyone have any opinions on the Smartys? I've been advised (because of ongoing / recovering knee problems) to get a clipless with some 'float' and the Smartys were recommended because of this (up to 6 deg) over the Shimanos, however some reviews complain about ongoing problems getting clipped in, and lots of falls once in because they won't release.

Any views?
