Looking for a new bike...

Hi all,
First post here etc
Quick question, I'm looking to buy myself a new mountain bike, I've not had one (that worked!) for about 5 years and am very very much out of the loop in terms of brands, styles, suspension etc etc you name it I almost guarantee I've NOT heard of it!
Basically, it will be used for simple road riding, off roading, tracks etc - nothing serious like downhill etc. I used to own a Claude Butler thing, very ancient (no suspension etc) and that worked well for when I road to work along the road, but was also good fun for when we went riding on the moors or along some trails, and the odd occasion when I took a trip to Penshurst downhill thing (as you can tell I am really no bike junkie lol) which was a good crack.
I'm not looking at getting into this seriously (unless I develop some kind of natural talent and loose about 2 stone in weight!) so nothing crazy. I'm mainly asking as I simply don't know what is hot and what’s not so to speak in the mountain bike world - e.g. I play a lot of golf and whilst if a beginner came along I wouldn't spec him a set of Titleist blades to use, I wouldn't at the same time suggest a set of Hippo graphite’s.
Some thing that isn't going to cost the earth, but is also not going to break the minute I try that all daring 1/2 metre jump
I've seen things like these so far:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/07CROSS-PHANTOM-F ... dZViewItem
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/EXILE-FIRETRAIL-F ... dZViewItem
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Barracuda-Colt-22 ... dZViewItem

Thanks in advance for any friendly advice.

The best way to start is to understand what budget you have. Which is....?0

For now I would read the Beginners Bieks thread in the beginers sections on tips on what to look for, and also the threads near your intended budget.
As a rule of thumb, avoid all sub 500 pound dual suspension bikes (very heavy, poorly specced) and look for a quality hardtail. Don't buy off ebay either - how do you know what size you need, or if it suits you?! Plus no after sales care or free service. I'd go to your local shop and try some bikes out.
What is your budget?0 -
Awesome, thanks for the swift replies guys.
Will checkout the beginners thread, sounds like the place I need to be hovering.
Budget is approx £200-£300 I guess. Depends if one for £320 is worth the extra etc then I can stretch.0 -
Some excellent bikes at this price, this thread has some useful info too.
