Tyre sizes, help!

My Gary Fisher HKEK is currently fitted with Bontrager Select wheels (26")
I want to change current off road tyres (2.2" and 2.25") to slicks or semi slicks, these seem to come in a lot narrower sizes 1.6" or 1.75".
Will these fit on these rims OK?

The Select rim diameter is stated as 26mm, though I am unsure if thats internal or external. If internal I would say they tyres would probably not fit correctly.0
