Can carbon framed road bikes be carried on boot/tailgate mounted car cycle carriers without damaging the frame ?

Can't think of any reason they should be damaged - wrap the top tube and any other parts of the frame resting on the carrier in plumbers foam pipe insulation first if it concerns you.

Some form of 'soft' protector between the hard mounts of the bike carrier and your frame is adviseable - also check to make sure that it absolutely secure and there is no movement / rubbing particularly if carrying more than one bike - it wouldn't take much to rub a frame away to nothing on a long journey.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
