Rear Mech Issues

Strange one here.
At home, on stand, gears are dialled in perfectly.
Get on the bike, perfect gear changes. As soon as I get a bit of mud on the drive train, I start getting shitty noises. Don't often miss gears, but it almost sounds like the adjustment is not correct and I can't seem to adjust it using the cable tension.
Also, I noticed yesterday that when on the 2nd cog (2nd biggest) the chain is slightly touching the 1st cog is this normal?
Could it be that the cables need replacing, or indeed, could it be that the rear hanger is not straight. How do you actually tell if the hanger is straight???
The kit in question is;
Rear Mech - 2007 XTR
Rear Cassette - 2006 LX
Chain - SRAM PC991 Hollow Pin
Like I said though, everything works fine until it gets a bit caked in mud, then it just sounds like a bag-o-shite.
It's getting a bit annoying, because I always keep the bike in perfect condition, everytime it gets muddy, I give it a full service, and everything is perfect again, until the mud comes.......
Thanks in advance!

I doubt this is the issue but you could check the side-to-side play on the derailleur cage. I had one that once it had a lot of wear on it the pivot points got some play. I could set it up to run fine but when things didn't run as smooth then it didn't run in exactly the same line.
With a 2007 xtr i really doubt that's the issue but it's easy to check anyway.Norco Sasquatch '07 - Parts?.. break'em and replace'em0 -
I will check, thanks, although the rear mech has only done about 50miles. I should hope that it isn't! :PCraig Rogers0

To see if the hanger is straight take the wheel and the mech off. You must find a long straight bolt, from an hub axle, for instance, that screws on the hanger threads. If you cant find one that screws on, you can use a long M8 bolt through the threaded hole and a nut, as long as the hanger has straight faces. Then you have to check if the bolt is parallel to the wheel axle. If it is not you can use the bolt to twist the hanger back in place.
If the above is not your problem I suggest new cables... or less muddy trails0 -
If the replacable hanger is bent, it should be just that - replaced.0

sounds like the high low limit,i had similar problem.
put your rearmech in smallest cog, undo the cable clamp..look from behind to see if top jockey wheel is directly below smallest cog.mine seemed to be but the chain was slightly touching next cog(enough to cause a rattle under load that sounded like poor indexing)
if you turn the high limit screw you will see the mech and obviously the chain move(turn accordingly to suit YOUR problem)
turn your crank and check the low limit by pushing by hand your mech,if its ok then pull tight and clamp the cable and re-index your gears.

it seems like ... you just need to setup the der. correctly. "Play" with your cable - tighten it a bit. I had similar problem. Just add 1-2 rotations on your shifter. Maybe this is not the case, but if you had no impacts and rode only 50 miles....0
