Servicing Shimano M540 SPDs

After eliminating an issue with the bearings in my bottom bracket I'm noticing some play in the axles on my SPD M540s. The instructions that came with them suggest contacting a dealer for servicing but isn’t it possible to do myself? Tried to loosen off the lock bolt to look in side but it didn't move easily and I thought better than to force it without getting some pointers first. Cheers.

You'll need a good quality spanner the right size to get the lock bolt off, and bear in mind they are threaded differently depending on the side. (Sorry I don't have a pair here to play with to tell you exactly which way - anyone?)

When you have the axle unit out, then you'll need a Shimano TL-PD63 socket tool or a pair of spanners to adjust it. I think these pedals can be adjusted with just the spanners, but the Shimano TL-PD63 tool is very handy for some Shimano pedals.

To regrease these pedals, clean them thoroughly, squirt a load of grease inside the body and reassembe them. The new grease will squeeze out through the bearings, forcing out any old grease.
