Ultegra STI -- design problem?
I have been having some trouble with Ultegra 10sp STI levers. The right hand lever keeps mashing-up the gear cable.
This has happened to me about three or four times over the past six months. I notice the shifting starting to become poor and then the cable goes slack. I find that the cable has been shredded by the mechanism within the lever. A close inspection reveals that just inside the hole into which the cable enters there is a 'lip'. THe cable seems to rub againjst the lip, causing it to become frayed.
Has anyone else had this problem? Its happened on two different levers, each on different bikes, so it is not just a fault with the one lever (such as a bur on the above-mentioned lip).
While I'm at it. What is the best 'tool' to carry with me that enables cutting of gear cables. I don't want to lug a full gear cable cutter with me! I have tried using a hack-saw blade, but cant seem to make it cut through the cable -- is there a particular technique of holding the cable while you cut?

I use these levers and haven't experienced this problem. Yo might want to get a dealer to look at them. Could be a faulty unit, could be a set-up problem.
The only thing I've ever found that cuts cable without making a mess of it is a proper set of cable cutters. But I've never felt the urge to carry them around with me.John Stevenson0 -

I suspect it's almost impossible to cut gear cable with a hacksaw blade - even if you managed it, I think it would leave so many frayed ends it would be impossible to thread the cable through the outer. Decent sharp wire cutters are the only way to get a decent cut I have found.
Have never had any probs with my Ultegra 10-speed mechs to date.0
