Campag Veloce Retaining Clip
I notice that the little wire retaining clip on the chainring side cup on my Ultra torque chainset was not fitted on my new bike. Looking at the diagram on the campag web site it isn't obvious what it does. Does anyone no if its really needed and if so what does it do :?:

When I got my bike made up at my LBS last year, it had no clip (which I only noticed about 6 months ago).
When I asked on another forum about this a while back, I got told it was a fail-safe if, for some reason, the BB cups worked loose. I thought this was a little spurious, as I've never known these BB cups to work loose, and what about the other side - surely that has just as much chance to loosen?
Anyway, I recently fitted a compact, and my LBS told me that it was only put on whilst you fitted it - but this doesn't marry up with the little fitting video on the Campag web-site, as this clip goes on last.
So, I'm as lost as you. But what I would say is that I spent a year cycling in all weathers without it, and it made no noticable difference, and the guy in my LBS (who rides a very expensive Pinarello Paris) doesn't have it on his either, and he has plently of them to hand, so would put one on if he felt he needed it I guess.
I've kept mine fitted on my new set-up, simply as it fills two extremely small holes that I suppose could potentially let in a little water or dirt, but I'm being very picky. At the end of the day it weighs about 0.00001gms, so it make no odds really.
I'd also be interested if anyone can difinitavely say what it's for, just so I can finally sleep...Knackered? Me?0 -
Thanks for that. I'm glad I am not alone ! I cant see what it does either but my BB (new bike was making a creaking noise from that side when under pressure so I though maybe the lack of it had some purpose. As you say maybe someone else will know ?0

It helps the installation of the crank, as then at least one side stays square. You put the right hand crank in, install the clip and then it makes connecting the left hand crank to it much easier. Without it it is easy for the cranks to jump out of line when you are trying to get the hirth joint lined up and when you tighten up the 10mm allen key.0

Had a centaur compact ultratoque fitted in April, the clip is on, but, last couple of rides loads of creaking from b/b area, so bad on last ride that I cut it short. Took to LBS, who stripped it down and found........kna*****d bearing on drive side. Not too impressive in 1500 miles!!
The brilliant guys they are tho, replaced it foc!0
