MTB Cassete size for road/commuting use

Hi All,
I have an old MTB that's used on the road/commuting. It has a 13-23 cassette. It's okay but sometimes I reckon the 13 isn't high enough. I also have a new 11-28 STX cassette lying around somewhere that I might fit. Question is, is the difference between the 13 and the 11 noticeable ie. what cassette size would you run if commuting (mostly flat) on a MTB ? I know someone is gonna ask the size of the 3 front chainrings, not a clue I'm afraid.
And while I'm here, I've read on Sheldon Brown's site about issues fitting an 11T sprocket on HG cassette. Mine is a 1993 vintage HG uniglide compatible hub ie. it has the threads as well as the splines. Anyone know if an 11-28 STX will fit ?

If memory serves, you needed to stick a thin spacer behind it to get a cassette with an 11 to fit on one of that generation of freehubs.
An 11 is a substantially higher top gear than your 13. Definitely worth having for those 'whizzing down hills' moments.John Stevenson0
