looking for suggestions to a camera I can use on the trail for fun shots as well as recording images of old blokes that should know better. Other key requirement is that wife needs to think it's primarily for usage on holiday. Have seen a fuji one recommended somewhere but can't find mag review

Panasonic Lumix FX30 was Which Camera test winner for July, it's got a 10x optical zoom & 28mm wide angle lens, dead compact too 8)Giant Defy 4 2014

I've just bought a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3 at £248 which included a 2Gb SD Card from Comet (online). It has a 10x zoom and 28mm wide angle lens, 7MP sensor and is pretty compact. I'm very impressed so far.
If you're gonna take a camera on the trail I would suggest that it is very compact and very robust. It depends on the sort of quality you want to get.Today is your day, your mountain is waiting, so get on your way {Dr Seus}0 -

I got an Olympus Mui 760 recently, cheapish and quite robust so far, small enough to take in a tiny bum bag when I did a charity half marathon in June(walked).0

Fuji F31-FD
Awesome compact camera, and only £120!!:

Canon Ixus gives excellent exposure and fine detail and is very tough for a digital camera. Dropped one from 90ft up a cliff face and it didn't smash the casing - mind you it didn't work either! However they will survive smaller drops!Commencal Meta 5.5.1

best value i found was the ricoh caplio R6.
7.24 megapixel, 7x optical zoom, 28.8mm wide angle lens for 170 quid.
i'd never heard of them either but the reviews were good. hasn't arrived yet tho.0 -

II've got a Fuji F31FD as mentioned above, its a good camera but if you don't mind something bulkier i'd get the S5600, bloody amazing camera and dirt cheap. Really easy to use and a good wide range of options. 10x optical zoom, full auto, full manual, apperture priority and shutter prioirity aswell as preset 'scene' modes. They get good write ups pretty much everywhere.0

Hmmmph - my Canon Ixus 700 is now broken with the zoom stuck. My local camera shop said they see a lot of those! And cost to repair is likely to be a solid £80. MAybe not so bomb-proof after all!Commencal Meta 5.5.1

I am also looking for a digital camera to use on the trails. So basically i want a camera that will take crisp, clear images. I heard sports setting is great for MTB photo's. I dont want to spend over £200.
Can anyone recommend me a camera?0 -
Do you want a compact or something bigger? The S5600 i mentioned above is great, can even use it with your gloves still on unlike nearly every compact.0
-
I dont mind how big it is, as long as it can take clear shots of fast moving objects
and a good video capture would a bonus0 -
I'd definitely suggest the 5600 then, its got video on it too and just goes for aslong as you want IIRC, unlike some which limit video capture to 20,30,60 seconds etc.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/FinePix-S5600-D ... B000B69IDI - don't buy it form amazon though, you can get them for £120-140 if you look about.0 -
Woah, i like the look of that
I'll write the name down and wander round my local town centre, thanks tom!0 -
I have a Canon Ixus 730 for out and about (it's basically the 750 but without a viewfinder so all the image previews are done on the LCD)
Can get 200 shots on a single battery charge
Or when I am out shooting properly I have my trusty Nikon D200
Mark0 -
As you mentioned battery life - With my Fuji S5600 I got about 600 shots out of one charge on some 2500mah Energizer NiMH's at the German grand prix and it was on a lot of the time, well impressed with that too.0

I've got a Canon Ixus 70 and have been fairly impressed with it but the general rule is the bigger the camera the better the shots. If you don't mind carrying around something a bit bigger the Canon Powershot range are superb. Or even bigger again go for an SLR and you'll never look back.0

Just been out for a blast in Roundhay Park woods and TBH the results from the Canon Ixus 730 are a bit pap!
It's great if there is a lot of light but once you are in the woods all the light goes to pot:
No flash = good light balance but blurred to chuff
Flash: looks like you are riding at night!!
Took my Nikon D200 (dslr) down there last week and the results were great but I dont really want to riding with over a grands worth of camera gear on my back!
Will take the other half's Fuji 7000 down this week and see how that one fairs
So far I have come to the conclusion that you need a camera that allows you a fair bit of control (even for fun riding)0
