tahnsk very much time to go get das credit card!!
  • Hmmm : big caveat here. If the 9 speed mech is indexed with matching 9 speed levers, the cassette will need the cogs re-spacing to the correct pitch, or the gear changing will be awful. A decent bike shop should be able to do this for you, but it may be cheaper to buy a new cassette.

Once the spacing is correct, there will obviously be one gear lever position which will be unavailable.

If you are using 8 speed levers with an 8 speed cassette, there should be no problem at all.

sorry NO a mech is DUMB it does not care. it is the shifter that tells it where to moved.

a 9 spd mech can be used with any cassette. a 7 speed could be used with any casette.

Useing jockey wheels of the correct width is advisable but the difference is not normally noticed ( except when using an 8 on a 9 set up as the chain is thiner).

the only issue with rear mech is the pull ratio. sram and campg with 1:1 and shimano with 2:1.

may be you did but, but why mention cog spacing etc? the hub is the same wether 8 or 9. most cassettes are not servicable so mtb users just though on the one that matches the shifters and fit the correct chain.

also the 9spd cogs are also thiner than the 6/7/8 cogs (well some are. sram is the same).

    sheldon sums it up well
Note: Shimano 8- and 9- and 10-speed cassettes/hubs are fully interchangeable for wheels with steel Freehub bodies.
The only parts that are different in any important way between the 8- and 9- and 10-speed systems are the shift control levers.

and it goes for sram MTB stuff as well.
