I'm a complete beginner looking to get into MTB, 6'2" med build, I don't want to spend anymore than £500.00 (just in case I don't take to it) but would consider a used bike, any suggestions/advice????

Personally I would go for new (lbs back-up etc)

    Gt Avalanche 1
    Giant XTC 4.5
    Specialised Rockhopper
    Carrera Fury

are all good bikes in that price range, best to try before you buy
    Giant Defy 4 2014
    GT Avalanche Expert 2006
    Specialized Hardrock 1989

Quite a few recent threads worth looking at of the same question.

Thnxs, there seems to be a lot of bike out there on e-bay under £500.00, seems like some good specs???? For a beginner would you suggest hard tail? It will be mainly track and trail I'm getting too old for anything too adventurous!

I forgot to add that a beginner should be looking to buy from a good local store. Little more expensive, but there is a reason why: you can see the bike, try it for size, chat to the pros, test it, get it built and set up for you, a free service, easy to reach aftersales care and usually free bits thrown in!

Full sussers will be very heavy at this price, you will get a hardtail with good componentry & frame though
