I'm wondering what MP3 player offers the best battery life. All it needs to do is play music, nothing else.

Which one would you recommend?

I'm impressed with the effort you're making finding a relevant image to match your replies.

Now this is where I show my lack of knowledge when it comes to mp3 players... as well as having their own built in rechargeable batteries, can any of them take regular AA batteries?

you can get one from creative. they do one that uses a "AAA" battery it's called MIVO or MUIVO either way dixons has it on sale at the moment. i have the creative zen 30gb and i agree it's way better then the ipod. for on the bike action i use the samsung YP-U2 it's a 2gb one and it will last on average 14 hrs. and most improtantly it a half inch by two inch long so it fits it to your pocket and there is a small screen so it won't break on the first crash. i have a few mates with the same one as they take a pounding, and they like the creative are dead simple to use. happy hunting

Best battery life i've ever seen is on the Sony NWA-1000 player. Sounds and looks really good too.

BUT, the software you get with it is crap, and it doesn;t work with windows media player, or i-tunes.

Oh, forgot to give an example!
I've left it playing continuously just to see how well it lasts, and I got around 22 hours of playback from it.

The battery in my ipod nano lasts 20+ hours of continuous playback.

I use it every day for about 40 minutes (more at the weekend) and I charge it every couple or three weeks. I don't know how long it takes to charge. I don't always charge it fully. I've never been in an "oh noes, no battery!" calamity.
  • I have an iriver T10 thats only on its 2nd AA battery since Christmas, to be honest i only use it for 20 mins a day when i walk to work but thats 7 months now which is quite impressive. Sounds wicked too. Only 512mb though, depends what size you're looking for

Can't say i've ever had a problem with my Creative Zen V-Plus 8gb. Lasted 350 miles in the car! Or it covered a 2 day cycling holiday to Fort William without running out of batteries. Not too bad.

sonys tend to be best for battery life. I get between 40 and 50 hours from my nw-s705f 2gig, which incidentally, argos were doing for £49.99 which is half the price of the sony centre.

I like sony. I was talking about Sony stuff with my boss recently, and we both came to the conclusion that we've never, ever, ever seen a piece of sony equipment fail. Sure we've seen things that have broken by being dropped, or whatever, but none that have just 'worn out'
Hell, we have a Sony tape player at work, that's older than I am, and it still works perfectly.

In fact, the only thing sony have ever let me down with has been the software for their mp3 players.

Everyone seems to slag them off but my Nano 8gb (black) is awesome. regularly get 22 hours out of a single charge.

I also have SonyEricson Walkman phone, good for lil journeys when u cant be bothered to fill pockets with technology, get about 18 hours on a single charge.

Then you have clearly never owned a PS2, I don't know anyone who bought one when they first came out that didn't have to replace or repair it later. Other than that Sony products are excellent. The battery life is the longest of any media player on the market, but this is largely due to the compression format they use and the dreadful software they come packaged with.
