City of London Police - Warning

Please see below an email received from the City of London Police regarding zero tolerance re cycling offences.
“Dear all,
This week and for the next two weeks the City Police has a zero tolerance re cycling offences. As I'm sure you know some cyclists are ignoring red lights / road signs & riding on the footpath all over the City, if you or your staff know of any particularly hazardous areas please let me know ASAP so we can do something about it.
I'm amazed more pedestrians aren't hurt, if the cyclists don't care when I'm about (in full uniform) what chance do the public have!”

Saw plenty of kids on bikes being busted by City Cycle Plod yesterday so it would appear to be true.0

People should not need warning if they are riding sensibly, i.e. not riding fast on busy pavements in a built up area.
The ironic thing is that, in London anyway, it i usually much quicker to stick to the roads than attempt to share the pavement with pedestrians, as cars are somewhat more predictable and slower to stop or turn.
I see cyclists trying to jump up on the pavement to cut out a junction or a blocked road and usually they don't actually save any time after picking their way though the masses.
I don't think that many 'proper', experienced cyclists ride that much on pavements for that reason so it will be thoughtless, stroppy youngsters who will mostly get pulled anyway, so who cares? Now living happily at http://www.uk-mtb.com !!0 -
I'm on holiday and out of London for the next two weeks.
I expect to find you all behaving a whole lot beter when I come back! This post contains traces of nuts.0 -

Be so good as to remind us when they stop bothering again.Bikes are traffic.0 -
Whilst I happy to see the police clamping down on illegal cycling, I just hope they will carry out a similar campaign on Motorist speeding on the embankment, or using their mobile phones, and once they’ve done those could they then try enforcing the ASL box’s, or parking on Red routes by taxi’s and delivery van’s15 * 2 * 5

Raddy, do you have a conection to the police?
Could you give me the email address so that I can make my suggestions directly.
I also like to contact them to remind them that they need to check the lights before stopping people, I got stopped a few weeks ago and the light was GREEN15 * 2 * 5

No - I have no connection to the police. I received the note through the facilties
section at my employer. I don't have an email address - this was the footer from the
email if anyone is interested.

So while the City police are busy being zero-tolerant to cyclists, does this mean there's even less chance of a motorist being pulled for running red lights, not indicating, not stopping at a give way line, talking on a mobile, cutting other road users up, speeding, etc. etc?0

Agreed about the pavement riding, and I won't make this a RLJ thread, but the implication is that experienced cyclists do obey the law.
However my own personal bugbear is cyclists who decide to ride the wrong way up oneway streets - this is IMHO inexcusable on any account.
As a pedestrian near Temple tube, cyclists frequently turn left (the wrong way) up Surrey Street from Temple place, rather than cycling the extra 10 metres to go up Arundel Street. This is usually done at speed, and without regards for peds. About once a week I see a very near miss where a ped steps out off the pavement assuming the road is safe to cross, only to find a cyclist inches from them!
Judging by the quality of the bikes, speed, and standard of clothes these are *always* experienced cyclists who should know better!

Yeah. The letter reads like someone who failed GCSE woodwork.0 -
And who cares anyway? If you can't pay the fine, don't do the crime. It's just a stupidity tax really, like with speed cameras.0

A warning first, then a £30 fine.0

If people ride/drive like idiots then they should suffer the consequences.
Just because you are on a bike shouldn't make you exempt from the law.....go get em boys in blue.0 -

hahahahhahaa love it! Good thinking.Too enthusiastic about biking for my friends...want to ride somewhere in the SE? TELL ME!!! hamsterscanswim@hotmail.com - and yes they can!0 -
I almost felt like the kid who isn't invited to any of the parties this morning as I sat at each red light while 99% of the other (many) cyclists sailed through. Whatever the police may be doing clearly isn't making a difference.0

Coming late to the subject, but they could start by applying their zero tolerance policy to the CoL policemen that always cut down the pedestrianised St Pauls Chruchyard, straight past the "no cycling" signs.0

I can picture it now.........
"Hello- Police how can I help?"
-"My bag has been stolen; I'm by the St. Pauls yard area"
"No problem, we have units right by there"
==== robber runs past police with the bag who are sitting on bikes
"Lets chase him, we're on bikes, he'll never get away!"
"No wait- it's pedestrianised. We better just run."
"Typical- I call the police, pay my taxes, pay their wages and they don't use the bikes they have, they just run. What a jobs worth........"
Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
Funnily enough that's where the nick name "Pig" comes from; the Police are always "Piggy in the middle." Now you know.Too enthusiastic about biking for my friends...want to ride somewhere in the SE? TELL ME!!! hamsterscanswim@hotmail.com - and yes they can!0 -
Trying to meet up with the Critical Mass ride a few months ago, I had to get down a short, one-way street the wrong way, so I jumped off and started walk/jogging along the pavement, steering the bike with my right hand on the stem.
Two police come around the corner towards me and comment on all the lights I have for safety and I joke how that still doesn't stop the idiots from not seeing me. At this point, the fat one then says that I shouldn't ride on the pavement (?).
I look at him, slightly bemused, and he informs me that he could give me a £30 ticket as bikes are not allowed on the pavement. (??????) When I continue to look stunned he then says that I should be carrying the bike but that he'll let me off as I am so visibly decked out.
What on earth was he on? Maybe he was just jealous that I was able to ride my bike without it buckling under my weight?
I thought he was joking but realised he WAS serious...

This was not in London but at lunch time i had a go at two coppers that were walking down a cycle path blocking cyclists getting past, I told them to set an example and use the footpath and stop blocking cyclists. One of the coppers got quite shirty but the other said sorry and moved over to the footpath.
They both looked a little embarrassedNo 1 fan in the jonesy124 Fan Club0 -

Good on you. ALL Police (should) know that they set the examples.
As long as you were polite and respectful, I think that was a good thing to do.Too enthusiastic about biking for my friends...want to ride somewhere in the SE? TELL ME!!! hamsterscanswim@hotmail.com - and yes they can!0
