How can I get my star nut out of my steerer? Can I just keep tightening the top cap and draw it out or will that ruin the steerer tube?
Cheers

You don't. See below quoted from parktool website

The star fangled nut is basically designed not to be removeable. If it is necessary to install another nut, simply use a punch and drive the first nut down until deeper than the new nut will sit. It is not necessary to completely remove the old nut. It is also possible to drive the old nut completely through the column and out the bottom. This will make the nut unuseable. It can also work to drill out the center of the nut, and then tap out the remaining pieces.

if you wish to remove the star nut. drill the center out and then fold the flanges in with long nosed pliers and extract.

What's a hollow nut? I'm just wondering i haven't seen one before, is it used to reduce weight?

A hollownut is for running your front brake cable through for bar spins etc. Favoured by freeriders/Dirtjumpers/BMXers

Essentially it is a hollow bolt/15mm nutted top cap (does what it says on the tin) :D
