I got slapped on my back on the way home last night.
Quite leafy village hurst in berkshire.
Passenger half climbed out of the window, guess he was around 15-17.
I got his reg , and the driver stopped down the road after realizing i had my phone out to jot down his number.
As I passed him again the passenger look really really uncomfortable, driver said using words like "mate" ..." he wants to appoligize" gesturing to the passenger.

I carried on riding.

This morning my shoulder hurts:(

I am contenplating calling the local police.

Is it worth doing?

There was a spate of people being shoved off bikes by passing cars in the Oxfordshire area (including a colleague) - not surprised that TVP are taking an interest.

I hope they get a shoeing. Have you seen a doc/got photos of any bruises?

    Ive not seen a doc.
I did break my shoulder in march, so I am sensitive on my shoulder.
It does seem to be getting worse during this morning, I now feel a little numb down to my elbow and aches across the front of the shoudler to my arm pit. :(

Looks like im going to have to go.

Dam Dam Dam.. i really could do without this.

...Tux, it's assult. Hope the police do something. Also hope there is not too much damage to your already damaged shoulder. Are you in the CTC or British Cycling? If so contact their legal departments...

Definitely an assault, especially as you appear to have persistent injury to show for it. Make sure you give the police as much supporting detail, descriptions of car, occupants as you can. Any witnesses? Consider pursuing a civil claim, for which a lower standard of proof is needed.

Avon & Somerset police did pursue the matter when I was slapped on the bottom by a passing scooter rider, although eventually came back to apologise for losing the paperwork. Fortunately, I did not suffer any lasting effects. Took a recent opportunity to mention this to the chief constable, but unfortunately have still not got round to putting it in writing.

Suggest actively keeping in touch with the police to avoid this sort of thing.

Suggest that any one experiencing this should use their mobile to report it straight away. Preferably out of sight of the miscreants. Get witnesses if possible.

I think they might take this seriously after that old man was pushed off his bike into a ditch in Essex.

I can't remember the exact details, but it was serious, I think the bloke broke his back or died :-(

    Thanks for the comments guys.
I will see the docs ASAP. Think my weekend rides are off

No, not member of ctc or anything:(

police seeing me at 1pm today.

I had no witnesses. I was pretty shook up at the time.
Ive checked on web and the reg number ties with the make/type of car.

The more I think of it, the more I think i got away lucky.
Im a bit spooked, gonna rethink my route next week to make it safer.

Is this sort of thing common? Ive only been commuting for 2 months!!!

this happened to me when I was out running. It really pissed me off.I'd definitely have pursued it if I had the number. More serious on a bike. Go for it.
  • I had a car full of guys, rap music blaring, "spinners" the whole works on a Golf with tinted windows etc etc chuck CD's at me. Luckily none hit me, but I punctured when they chucked a couple into the road and they shattered.

Pursue this claim until you have exhausted EVERY avenue of prosecution available to you. You can't physically hurt those two d*ckheads - so hurt them financially.

    Good luck.

Hey Tux. They are idiots and should be penalised. Hope you'll be OK.

I often ride the minor roads between Maidenhead and Reading so am concerned that these fools are on the same roads [assuming I'm thinking of the same Hurst]. Is it possible to tell me the make, model and colour of the car just in case I also have a run-in, however unlikely.

    Thanks,

    Martin

Spent an hour with the police. Took a two page statement.

They openly say not to hold my breath to catch the driver or passanger.
The Car is registered the other side of the country.
There are many traveller sites in this area. They suspect it came from one of them.
The registration is now listed as a stop and arrest the driver if seen.

    They advise in future...
Under any circumstance DO NOT HESITATE to call 999 At the time of the event like this.
If I see the car again call 999 imediately.
Dont get seen to be calling on the phone in view of the car or at an incident.

Get 'back on the horse', so to speak. I suppose just take stock in the comments, above, that long-term commuters have never had it happen to them. (Nor have I).

I had a cautiousness with Melbourne tram tracks after an off - but I'm OK with them now (and some Geac Evolution tyres).

Almost happened to me a couple of months back. Stood at traffic lights and could hear some shouting from a few cars back, as I pulled out into the outer lane, a car came passed and an 'old' teen tried to grab/hit me as they passed. Had the car not been full of 4 of them, plus I wasn't wearing carbon soled road shoes, I might of had a go. In this case, just rode passed them at the next lights and shook my head.

Do report it as it's potentially very dangerous, and is an assault.

    Just an update on this.

    The police called me sunday.
They found the driver and car. He was stopped for another offence.
Looks like its not travelers as first thought, but some locals.

They are issueing him with an arrest so he can come in and expain who the passenger was at the time.

The police will keep me updated.

Good news Tux. Keep us posted - I'm so sorry that this happened to you... as a new commuter too I had been a bit concerned that something like this would be common. From what people write on here, and from my first experience, it seems that this is the exception by a long shot. Most drivers are at least considerate - and hopefully the police will be able to do something about this guy.

Have you considered contacting your local newspaper about the incident, maybe even writing a short article about the dangers of such actions yourself? I only suggest it as maybe making an issue out of it will remind people (and inform people a bit on the thicko side) that hitting people from a moving vehicle isn't pleasant or safe.

That 'old man' was a young man in his 50's :) from the Maldon CC. He did have a spine injury but saw him last week and he's walking/driving ok, don't know if he's back on the bike though.
  • i'm surprised none of you guys have ever heard of this, but slapping cyclists on the arse is a well-known game that idiots play when they're driving cars.

I can't remember the name of it by try doing a google search.

I remember someone showing me a video of a guy who got half way out of a car in the middle of said game to smack a female cyclist on the arse and ended up smacking into a parked car as a result of his stupidity. And by the looks of the impact (which must have been at least 30mph), he probably died too.
