i have a triple 105 9 speed set up on my bike. the middle chainring has what appear to be 4 small blades that sit just below the teeth. the chain clicks against these blades with each peddle , i.e. 4 times a revolution. it is not a particularly loud noise but as i'm sure you can understand it is really beginning to P!$$ me off

does anyone know:
a) what the blades are for
b) if i change to a shimano chain from the high end SRAM 9 speed chain i have will this stop the noise

any advice much appreciated

The 'blades' help to lift the chain on the up-shift from a smaller to bigger chainring - without then the shift is far more sluggish. Are you sure your chain isn't worn excessively? Check out www.parktool.com for bike maintenance tips.

sounds like your ring and/or chain are worn.

My set up is the same and I took it apart and filed the tops off so they just cleared the chain (Connex). Even all new they did it, so nothing to do with wear. Better any slight increase in change-up time (I don`t race), than inceasant clicking.
