hi, i had a pretty big crash earlier today and this has bent my front wheel out of shape.

I was wondering how know if i have to buy a whole new wheel, or will my local bike shop be able to re-tru the wheel?

Thanks in advance.

That depends on how the buckle has occured. Take it back to where you got it from and see.

Sorry mate you crashed it, its not designed to be crashed like that. if it was it would weigh a ton and half and be made of cast iron :P

fraid it won't be warrenty job.

However broken parts are an oppertunity to upgrade :D

Merlin do lovely handbuilt wheels for relitively little money :P

Even if you lie the shop will know your pringle shaped wheel isnt a result of riding on some newly relaid road. They can tell!

You could lie... but there may be tell tale signs ie a dent in the rim etc or big flat spot. Wheels rarely spontaneously collapse... Be honest, it often pays. Tel them you hit a hard landing, smile, take in asome biscuits and they might just tweak it up for you if its salvageable.

Damn theres my plan gone. Ah well. Hopefully it can be re trued. what is re truing anyway, is it bended the spokes back into place or the actual rim? how do they do it?

For the low down, follow the links from Sheldon Brown below. Basically the tension in the spoke bends the rim back into line. The key is strong even tension for a good wheel. If the rim has warped this is no longer possible. Hopefully your crash just loosened a few spokes off.

ok. yeah, i understand. Hopefully i havent bent the rim and its just the spokes.

I may have to get this done at Halfords though :?

how much is it for a new wheel? specifically a dirt jump wheel if that exsists.

im quite new to the 'technical' side of biking, as you can probably tell

Well, hopefully Halfords has someone that knows what they are doing...

If you do go for a new one, don't buy from Halfords - get one from Merlin. A Deore hub on Mavic EN321 will be plenty strong, and been handbuilt will last. Looking at 45 quid or so.

This halfords is quite a good one, i'll try and speak to the manager over one of the kids though. So fingers crossed.

would i be fine looking for a new wheel in cyclopedia and cycles uk? As i am unable to buy online.

try that and you may find your self spending money one some new wheels.

and you might have if sorted just for the cookies.

but again with out seeing it there is no way we could comment if it is fixable or not.

I don't know their standard of build, but if you have a word with the builder and tell him your needs, he should be able to knock you something up. It won't be cheap though.

Any way i can check myself?

I have checked the spokes where the wheel seems to be bent and some of them are a little loose compared to spokes on the opposite side of the wheel, which appears to not be bent. (poor english i know)

EDIT: Ignore this post, the only way for me to know for sure is to get a 'proffesional' to check it over
