Hiring road bikes abroad (France)

Has anyone done this ? Is it common ? I've seen plenty of mtbs for hire in the Alps but never a road bike (but then I've not looked that much). Do they come with flat pedals or does one take one's shoes and they have spare cleats that you fit to the shoes.

Thanks in advance

Went to Provence last year which has a famous cycle route which I did part of last year.Falcuquier iin Haute Provence is where I started the route from it and it had a bike hire shop with mostly touring bikes..Try a general search for Cycling in Provence for a listing http://www.beyond.fr/sports/veloluberon.html

Quite a few places do it

Hired a road bike when I visited Annecy a few year back

You need to look out for location velo de course, quite a few have websites, type this into google.fr with the location you are visiting and I'm sure it will come up with something
