SPD shoes

I've just bought my first SPD shoes - Specialized BG Sonoma (via Wiggle) - and they're great to wear.
Question: If I remove the SPD cover on the sole to try them with cleats/SPD pedals, can the covers be put back in place? This is so I can use them with non-SPD pedals and walk around without getting crap in the cleat mounting holes.
Advice appreciated.

I think it locates in a groove in the rubber that surrounds the cleat area so it kind of fits in place like a plug. doesn't the instruction book give any advice?0 -
I think the only instructions I found where in the SPD/Cleat pedal leaflet (Shimano) on using pliers to pull the rubber cover off.0

it sticks in place AFAIK
just use some araldite, that should hold it in placeFacts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0
