Screeching disk brakes!!

HI. I am very new to MTB and I'm afraid am not experienced at all in bike maintenance at the moment (although I hope that will change!) so I'm going to ask for help on what is probably a very common issue! (sorry!)

I bought a GT Avalanche 0.5 a couple of years ago with the hope of getting into mountain biking in my free time. However, within a few months, the brakes really howl when I use them, making an awful screeching sound (they are Shimano hydraulic disk brakes).

When cycling down the street / on the road, it is so loud I am almost afraid to brake, and frighten people!

I thought maybe they just needed cleaning - so I took my bike to the local bike shop for a 'service', but the guy seemed to think this was a common problem, and there was nothing you could do about it!! This concerned me, as I am now too afraid / embarassed to take the bike for a ride on the road.

Can anyone help??

I've currently got a similar problem with my rear disc,Shimano XT.There is what feels like a small amount of vibration,so I will check the rotor is true.

Let us know what your fix was.
