Rear Deraillieur

I have a piece of rubber (10mm x 20mm x 1mm thick) cable tied around the main pivot of my Shimano LX rear mech. I want to know why it's there and if I should remove it? I could give the LBS a call but thought I would throw it open to the 'panel' first.

Any ideas?

to stop the mech crashing into the chain stay.

okay fair enough, but why do they not show this kind of padding/protection on any images on the shimano website?

Specialized Rockhopper Disc '07. I've been having nigling problems with the rear mech ever since buying it. Been back to the LBS a few times to have them re-sorted and everytime they say the gears are perfect. A short ride later and i'm finding the shifts are not as precise. I need to learn to sort the shifting myself. I hate deraillieurs!

thought so. most Specialized come with the pad on but it does not seem to stay on too well.

gears read parktools linky in sig.

Pad is still on quite firm, no real issues with it, just wondered why it was there - Cheers.

Park tools link - read it many times, and various 'grime time' and 'tuning' pages in MTB magazines too. I will persevere with the rear mech. but I know it will always beat me!

    Cheers for all the help.

Shimano mechs are a pain in the arse for not working properly.

I have to re-adjust my XT rear mech every other day.
Not by much but it's still REALLY annoying.

I also have a rubber boot on the mech so it doesn't bash the chainstay.
I used to be undecided but now I\'m not so sure!?

I've always had this problem with old and new cable alike.

I always buy XT cables. Never cheapy fibrax jobs but still have to make small adjustments.

I wonder, could the temprature make a difference?

On a hot day the cable would expand and on cold days it would contract a little wouldn't it?

Its a possibilty! Though I would check out the cable routing and the cable stops: make sure they are fully driven home. XT cables arent the best, and require a lot of maintenance. Flying Snakes or Clarks Clim8 are better.
