Play in front mech

My front mech is set up fine, it shifts fine and doesn't rub the chain, but there is quite a bit of play in it. It can be wiggled about by a good few millimetres, looking it at it seems to be down to play in the pins that hold it together and is constant regardless of what gear is selected.
It's a Deore mech (IIRC - maybe Alivio - pretty low-rent either way). It's certainly nothing like the SRAM mech on my girlfriends kraken, which is rock steady in every position. Is my mech knackered then, or should I expect some play? It seems to do the job OK.
