Seve Ballesteros anounced his retirement today.

In '92 or '93 Cycling's own Blue Peter reporter Paul Sherwen - the man who coined the phrase Big Mig - interviewed Ballesteros who was watching Indurain in the Tour. The only question Sherwen could stumble out was whether Indurain was more popular than Ballesteros in Spain which the genial Seve agreed. Apparently throughout his career this was a source of frustration for Ballesteros who was more recognised abroad than in his homeland.

Before and since that date Ballesteros had many triumphs including the Ryder Cup in '97.

I write this in vain hope that sports journalists develop skills to appreciate the overall context of the sports about which they write, hone their interviewing techniques and analytical capabilities and understand that the people who read or listen to them aren't 14 year old children.

Happily for Cycling Sherwen like Liggett has improved his skills after countless tries at reporting the Tour. Duffield seems to have plateau'd altho he does appreciate there's a world outside fanzines. Unfortunately Radio Five Live the BBC's sports radio program still folows the Blue Peter model.

Not really sure why you say that...other than the way they broke away from talking about the Russian situation to hear Seve going on about how hard it was at his age to still hit a ball round a field with a stick.
