Budget Bike part 2

Further to an earlier question, I have managed to increase my budget to £400.00 and have seen the following bikes, all under this figure. I will be mainly doing fitness activities with a view to joining a local club and possible time trails later on. Any opions would be gratefully received. The 3 possible contenters are
Trek 500 (2007)
Giant SCR 3 (2006)
Ribble 7005 (2006)

    Just got a Carrera Vanquish 07 for £399, full Tiagra setup 7005 alu frame and 12k weave Carbon forks, and it rides spot on. I know some people have a downer on Halfords bikes but i have been riding Carrera MTB for last 5 years and they have been excellent. Worth a look for that money

    depending on what size you require the giant scr3.o can still be had for £350 at www.winstanleysbikes.co.uk .

    Am having the same debate, complicated by me not being able to decide if I need a towpath compatable bike...

    Had a look on the net at the Ribble, looks good but clearance only for 23mm tyres with 'guards on, which put me off...
    It's just a hill. Get over it.
