Regrease bearings and cone tightening

Hi Folks,
Is there some kind of black art to tightening up cones ? I've recently stripped the hubs, regreased em, cleaned bearing etc....After a couple of rides I notice that grease is leaking out. Maybe I overdid the amount of grease, however I'm convinced the were tight enough, any tighter and the axle would not have spun freely. Is leaking grease indicative of too loose cones, or does excess always find its way out ?

yes there is. and park tools have a great explaination as to how.
have a read. linky below."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Nearly all the "good" maintenance books suggest bearings should be "swimming" in grease. I've found in all sorts of hubs this means that grease starts oozing out once you get back on the road. The key - I have found through painful experience- is to make sure this grease is removed before it can get dirty and wet (and hence suck moisture and dirt into the hub). It makes for a dirty bike, even if you're diligent with a cloth, but is nothing much to worry about. I think it likely that the rotational effects of the bearings - and the propensity of them to move around relative to each other (hub bearings are not usually caged) tend to throw grease out of the bearing space.0
