I have been advised by a work colleague to get a GIRO.
Looking around these are £50 - £90.
Is GIRO the way to go or would nother helmet do the same job?

They all do the same basic job, the key is getting a good fit, so they must be tried. More money generally means less weight, better venting, superior retention and fasteners, and better looks.0

As Supersonic says, it's mainly about fit, and you'll need to visit a shop to test that!
If you do go the Giro route, then I think the Giro Hex is a great helmet (I use one!), it fits me well, gives a little more coverage than normal helmets, and looks good too. It's alos a lot cheaper than the Xen!
Check out CyclesUK. they sell the Hex for £34.99 including free P&P which is a bit of a bargain!0 -
There does seem to be a certainprice point at which you can get a perfecly decent lid.Lids like the Giro Hex,Bell Slant and Giro Havoc, around the £40 mark all seem to be as good as you really need.
I'm currently undeicded between these 3.I like the Hex for the coverage, but the Havoc seems to be better vented, and the Slant can be got for less than £30 so represents amazing value for money, and I've always liked the fit of my current Bell.2006 Giant XTC
2010 Giant Defy Advanced
2016 Boardman Pro 29er
2016 Pinnacle Lithium 4
2017 Canondale Supersix Evo0 -
I use gyro helmets simply because they seem to do larger sizes. But im really pleased with them.Eagles may fly high but Weasels dont get sucked into jet engines.

got the 2006 silver model myself and it's very comfy
they still have some 2006 ones in for about £50 but limited sizes.0 -
As others have said would recommend you try before you buy as they are different shapes, for the recognised brands then as rule of thumb the more you pay the more vents you get. the price increases as the helmet needs to be more technical the less of it there is to achieve the same protection, Specialized for example have a Carbon-reinforced InnerMatrix (roll cage if you like) to compensate for the fact that there is less helmet
