Upgrade Fork For 2001 Marin Hawk Hill

I've got a 2001 Marin Hawk Hill which is fitted with the original In Sync 328 front suspension fork. I love the frame and now feel that a fork upgrade is worthwhile. I'm new to all this upgrade malarky and so have registered here for a little advice from people who hopefully know what they are on about:
1. Should I buy new or do used forks offer better value?
2. What size/spec forks do I need (bearing in mind I use my bike for the daily commute to work on the road so I'm more interested in small bump comfort than large bump tolerance!)
3. How much do I need to spend to see (feel?) a worthwhile benefit over the 328's?
Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Ah, I remember the sync 328! Any 60 quid up fork would be an improvement, but I'd spend 140 or so on the Marzocchi MX Pro or an RS Tora. Might as well buy new and get a full warranty.0

Thanks Supersonic - I'll do some research on those you suggest. What spec do I need to look for in terms of travel, headset size etc? As I said, all this is pretty new to me!0

The frame should be fine upto 100mm of travel, and I am sure you need a 1+1/8th inch threadless steerer, the most common standard. You may benefit from a shop fitting it though.0

Thanks, I'll get on with that research!0

Any sort of budget in mind? That money goes a hell of a lot further than it did 6 years ago! For less than 100 you can get a RS Dart with adjustable rebound damping and lockout, though it is heavy.0

I'm new to this upgrading game and have no 'set' budget. As long as I get a noticeable improvement over the 328, I'm happy - of course if it can be done for £100 so much the better!
Will the dart give definate improvements?0 -
The 328 if I remember was a 70mm travel coil fork with 'open atmosphere' air damper, and weighed about 4.5lbs. It was not the best performer, and the Dart would be a big improvement, however it would be heavier at 5.4lbs. I would be tempted to spend a little more and get the Marzocchi.0

As I stay on the roads, weight is not a great issue.
I'll try and track down some reviews and check some prices. I'll also check which forks my local dealer stocks.0
