Assuming i had a brand new bike would it be a good idea to buy a second chain and then swap them over every few weeks? With a Sram chain and a power link it'd be dead easy to do.

why? to hope to make the drive train last longer?

i would expect it to wear out faster.

If you wait till the chain is worn then replace it you often get problems that mean you need to replace casette and chain rings, if you are always running with a newish chain then you won't get the same wear rate. Maybe - I'm really not sure hence the question! The common wisdom is to replace the chain before its worn out - my thinking is that if you swap the chain every few weeks then It'll even out the wear.

because as the cassette will continue wearing when the first chain is reomoved it will need to wear in again each and every time you change chains.

how long do you normally keep a chain for?
