Looking for new MTB shoes - Shimano MT40 any good ??

My current bike trainers are now knackered, so I need a new pair, rather than another pair on converse, etnies, nikes etc, I've been looking today at some 'specialist' MTB shoes.
I tried a piar of these Shimano MT40 shoes today, felt pretty good, but at £49 not sure if I really would benefit that much from them.
I mostly ride off road, dirt, XC at weekends and do a 12 mile commute 4/5 times a week.
Anyone own a pair of these ? Would they be worth it for my riding needs ?

They would be a good option if you ever plan to upgrade to SPDs. But with flats I have always used a non specific trainer - look better, can be worn off the bike without looking silly!0

I have had a pair for a couple of years now with SPDs . Very comfortable arond the toe area, but as they are a suede fabric I wonder how they woulld stand up to off road use. I use mine on road0

Mine have been going well for about a year now using them off road on flatties. I notice the difference loads with the stiffer sole when you get to stand up and pedal.. The fabic has stood up well enough for me. The colours is the only problem with it getting very dirty when it gets wets but that not a real problem0

I have the MT40s and whilst they are comfortable they do have two problems. One is that the sole has cracked towards the toe; its not destroyed them yet, but they will fall apart by the end of the summer I think. The other problem I have had with the MT40 and its predeccesor (can't remember the name) is that constant wet and dry cycles as you will get with going off road cause the suede toe area to shrink downwards.
The predeccesor did this and I thought it was because I put it in the washing machine. However this shoe has done the same and I havn't used the washing machine on it.I even bought one size larger to prevent it pinching over time but its still affecting them.0 -
i use the cheaper MT-31's...they where great with my flatties with specialized mag pedals.but got some cleats and mx clipless pedals..pretty fantastic for xc really...went to the dark side and quite enjoying it0

for flats - 510s are literally the only way to go. unless you plan on no footed tricks as the grip is too good for that lol.0
