Giant SCR 3.0

Hi, i'm thinking about buying my first road bike in 20 years to use as a training fitness bike alongside my mountain bike. Given it's purpose i'm not looking to spend too much and was looking at the Giant SCR 3.0.
I've seen the bike advertised for £330 for an '06 or £430 for an '07 with some extras thrown in on the '07 .
Does anybody know if there were any major differences between the 2 model years?According to the specs i have seen online i can't tell any.
If anybody knows of any other good deals worth considering feel free to jump in or advise me why the SCR 3.0 might not be a good idea. I like the idea of the compact from the point of view of body lengh.I'm also looking at getting a medium as i'm 5'10" and if anybody else has an SCR and is my height maybe they could advise if this is a good fit.

a few of the guys in the club i ride with have the SCR3 (06 model) and it seems a very good bike.
For £330, you can't go wrong, if you can't tell from the specs what the difference is, then there can't be much. What are the extras with the 07 model, and are they worth the extra to you.0 -
Hi Philak
Can you post some links or let us know the differences between the 2 models?
Other than that, the SCR range seems popular. A pal returning to cycling bought the 2.0 model for his 50th birthday and absolutely loves it, it seems a good all-round bike as it will take mudguards and a rack so winter/summer use is OK and lightweight long distance/commuting duties too.
There was a really long thread on the SCR range on C+, the main irritation was a squeaky seat-post for which many had found a cure, otherwise nothing but praise. It's hard to go wrong with one of the big brands.
Regarding sizing...this is THE most important thing to get right, you need to get good advice from a decent dealer to make the right choice. Top-tube length i.e reach is the important issue here.
Conggrats to returning to cycling, you'll not regret it...promise!0 -
If there's no major difference in the two year's models you could get the '06 AND a £100 wheel upgrade (say Mavic Aksium, Fulcrum Racing 7 etc) for the same cost as the 2007 version. Just a thought.0

Well, at least it narrows the options...
It's still a good bike for the price. Again get some sizing advice or try and get a test-ride if possible. If the price quoted on the site is close to the local bike-shop price, I'd go with the bike-shop, better advice/support and after sales service...worth a few extra bucks.0 -
ive got an scr 3.0 2007 model in a small and im 5ft 7 and its a great fit, I cant see any difference between the 2 models either and if id have been a bit more savvy when i got my bike id have gone for the 2006 model as im just about to buy new wheels0

Thanks for the input everyone. Looks like an ok bike for what i need it for0

mmmmm....now that looks right up my street...shame about the price and the fact that none of my 3 LBS' ( ) actuall stock it!!!
Hmmmm...
It's just a hill. Get over it.0 -
Hi there, I have a 2006 SCR 3.0 size M and I am 5'10 as well. Fits me well and I have no regrets about buying it. Its a great job (I only ride for fun and fitness). Only difference between the 3.0 and the other models in the range is the groupset. The sora and tiagra mix works well anyway but can always be upgraded along with wheels etc if you want. All in all its a comfortable bike with a good frame and excellent value for money considering some bikes with similar specs can cost twice as much.0

I'm 5 10" and got a medium SCR 3 too. Cracking bike for what you want and at that price I'd be temted to upgrade the wheels (I did and seems to ride better, got Shimano R550s'). My only gripe with the bike was the original wheels on my bike kept shedding spokes, which kind of prompted me into the change sooner than I'd have liked.0

Hi Guys,
What size frame is Medium? I'm interested in this bike and sellers show it in frame sizes 58.5cm, 55.5cm, 50cm, 46.5cm & 42cm.
I'm just shy of 6ft.

Oleg, medium is 50cm in the Giant SCRs. I have a 31" inside leg and it fits me.0

Also been looking for first road bike for 15 years and had seen the Giant SCR 3.0.
I have found the 2007 version for £375 at the following
http://www.buyabikedirect.co.uk/product ... o&pid=2051
and
£379.99 at
http://www.jejamescycles.co.uk/index.ht ... 0&brandID=
Looks good for that price, anyone with opions or have brought from these places before?
They seem to be suggesting a 55.5 large for someone my height 6' 2"..... anyone around this height have any experience with this Giant frameset?

hi guys
i purchased a SCR 3.0 four days ago, i am 5ft 8 ins and bought a medium seems to fit me ok, i have to say i am very impressed with the build quality mine is an 07 i paid £400.00 from my LBS. i have not been off it since. i love it.
go for it you will not regret it.Steveaps0 -
Well I bit the bullet today. Funny how you always end up spending more than you thought you would but i got an '07 SCR Ltd today for £550 (down from £650).
Initial ride impressions are good.Got the medium and it seems to fit me fine. It's a compact double with Tiagra throughout and altho i've only seen MTB shifters for the last few years it's pretty easy to get used to .
Also had to buy a road jersey. Geez, £45 for something thinner than a pair of tights!! Thanks for all the input on the thread anyway.
BTW. Anyone in the Poole area on this forum who might know where a 10 course is around here?0
