I'm not fussed about weight, but on a long off-road Pyrenean descent (must have been about 3000 ft) the rear rim tape on my son's bike had totally melted - it was the plastic type. Rare conditions, I know, but since then I have been happier using Velox cloth tape. It comes in widths for all rim types.0

OK I'm convinced, will replace the dodgy rim tape on the kraken with electrical tape.
But, Screwfix only sell tape that is 50mm wide so I'll have look around. What width is best? I'd have thought even 25mm would be too wide.GT Aggressor XC2 - lovingly crafted by the artisans at Halfords with the addition of XT hydraulic brakes, M520 pedals, Ritchey Ergo foam grips and my old nice and comfy Spesh BG saddle0 -
No, replace it with Velox (it only costs £1.99) - if you want to avoid the melted electrical tape (and welded on to rim tube) effect - unless of course you wont be doing any substantial descents0

It's the girlfriend's bike, no substantial descents, and disc brakes anyway.
I picked up some tape from a hardware store in our village, it's 19mm wide which I see is not an untypical width for rim tape 8) . Plus it was £1 - saving me 99p - and is enough for 4 wheels with two layers and 81cm left over.
