Feels like chain has come off but it hasn't - what's wrong?

Hi Out on my ride today, cycling along quite happily after slowing down for junctions etc, suddenly nothing in the pedals, as if the chain had come off but it hadn't - anyone have any idea what's going on? After pulling over changed gear a few times, then could start riding againg, I can't see anything major wrong but i'm not great mechanically!

    Your free wheel has worn and needs replacing. Just take it to a bikeshop and theyll change it.

    Chain has probably worn as well.
