Road/Cross Bike with Discs
Hi All
I am looking for winter trainer/commuter that has a road/cross geometry, drop bars etc. Compact gearing would also be needed.
It must have disc brakes rather than canti's and have full braze ons for a set of full mudgards and about 700 x 28 tyres.
Two i have seen that may fit the bill are:
Kona Sutra
Trek Portland Commuter
Any body got an experience of either? Can the trek take full mudgards - supplied with rubbish crud catcher type?
Finally, is anyone aware of any other bikes (or frames) that I could consider?
Many thanks
NS

The Planet X Uncle John crossbike has the mountings for disc brakes although it is supplied (as standard) without them. If you email Brant at Planet X he should be able to give you the cost of getting disc brakes fitted (they're really helpful at Planet X).
The frame & forks will take mudguards up to 50mm wide, I've just fitted SKS P45 mudguards to mine and I've got 700x32 tyres fitted.0 -
you could always go custom and get a Condor Cadenza and have drop bars fitted. I've got a flat bar version with discs. Loads of mud clearance, and would take either 26" or 700 wheelsRecipe: shave legs sparingly, rub in embrocation and drizzle with freshly squeezed baby oil.0

Glad I'm not the only one after a lightish day bike that has a front disc and drops, I saw a schwinn advertised but have yet to see one. I realise that a disc will add a lb or so to the bike weight but on a day bike I can cope with that.0

Thanks Chaps
That Planet X frame looks like it might be just the thing.
Cheers

Planet-X doesn't come with a disc-compatible fork as standard - you'll need to check with them first. Also, they only generally do full bike-builds these days, so not sure whether they'll make you a disc version. Van Nicholas also do a disc compatible frame. I had a custom ti frame built by Xi'an in China a few years ago which has massive clearances and is fitted with discs. I swap to 26" MTB wheels for when I want to ride in the soft stuff.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

Yeah from the photo it looked like that was the case.
I would plan on getting a Kona project 2 Cross fork with disc mounts from LBS. Only £50.
Hopefully, that would work.
Cheers

What about the cannondale crosser? they have avid discs, mudguard eyes front and rear although no seatstay rack eyes, avid disc brakes, compact chainset, wide clearances for cross tyres and make a nice commuter/tourer - I use mine with a saddlebag and I think its a great bike0

The Uncle John is a very versatile frame and does have a rear disc mount. I'm very pleased with mine, although I think the paint finish is a bit fragile for every day use. It looks good but there are plenty of scratches and chips on mine after a few months.I\'m sure I had one of those here somewhere0
