:(:(:(

I am quite depressed - I took my brand new bike out for it's first ride yesterday.
Going through a gap I hit a well disguised small post, about a foot high. I have now discovered a quite deep scratch along the chain stay. It's about two inches long a quite deep - through the paint work.

I'm new to all of this. Is this just life and I've got to grin and bear it and accept it.

Most importantly, is the scratch something I need to worry about - get covered? How?

Thanks

    it's chromoly reynolds 520
it isn't dented but it is certainly deeper than a superficial scratch - all the paint has gone and I can see the metal!

should I just get over it?

Its a shame when stuff like that happens, but you will have more battle wounds after a few rides so dont worry about iti.

If you're really worried pop down to your local Halfords (with the frame) and get them to mix you up a top up pen in the right colour and use that.

But to be honest, scratches are a part of MTBing, it's gonna happen sooner or later.

    STAY AWAY FROM HALFORD!!!!!!

Get a touch up pen the sam ecolour as your paint, or a sticker, or some clear nail varnish and cover the scratch. Being steel it will rust.

since its a new bike im guessing you want the finish to be perfect.

i'd go halfords and dont bother to ask them to match paint to your bike. it is impossible to mix paint due to having to mix the right amounts and ingredients of colour, your better off choosing the closest match from the self your self.

1, clean the scratch with a bit of sandpaper

2, primer the scratch since its a deep one you might need to build it up two coats should do it. let it dry for 24hrs

3, fill up the scratch with paint till the paints sits proud of the original paint let it cure for 24hrs

4, sand it down with fine grit sandpaper rinsing the paper in water to unclog till its flush then with some rubbing compound polish to a shine and then use wax for an even better shine

after alll that it should be very hard to spot
