Hi

This is a bit obscure, but hopefully there will be someone out there who knows the answer.

I have acquired an almost complete tandem from the council tip that I would like to restore. It is a veloSchauff and in quite good nick.

The main parts which are missing are 3 of the cranks & the rear BB. The BBs have no threads, but take press in cups, like most BMX bikes. However the size is approx 40mm whilst BMX have 'American' or 'Ashtabula' BBs which are 51mm ish. It is larger than an 'English' BB, so a threadless BB of the type used if you've stripped threads doesn't fit. I have searched google high and low and can find no information, source of supply or even acknowledgement that 40mm press in BBs even exist (not even sheldonbrown). The front axle & crank which is still fitted is cottered.

Does anyone know where I should look for a compatible BB and axle? Or can anyone suggest a method of adapting a modern BB?

If I can't solve this one, it will have to go back to the tip! So all offers of help very much appreciated.

Thanks

Jacko
