Campag Compact... Compact Front Mech?

How vital is it to change to a compact front mech if you change from a 53/39 to, say, a 50/34 chainset? Some people say you should, others say the normal front mech works perfectly well.
Knackered? Me?

    I've been running a 50/34 on my centaur set-up with the standard mech for quite a while now. Works just as well as it did with the 53/39. You just need to adjust the height of the mech.

    Used both on my Centaur compact. An ordinary mech works well, but a compact mech works better.
