can rip to h264 format too - which gives much better quality for file size compared to AVI/DIVX/XVID etc.
It does take quite a while to convert though unless you have a pretty fast machine though0 -
On my old 17" PowerBook it would take about 8 hours to do 2 hour DVD...
that is on (IIRC) 1.33GHz Power PC
I've not tried it on my MacBook Pro yet though - but that will be MUCH faster0 -
I'd be surprised if it wasn't...0

Thanks, will give it a try.0

And all that on a 1.33Ghz???
Dont think so.
I have a prescott 3.2 and that takes about the time you quoted.
It's funny how the first impressions thing works on forums as well.
You can tell when not to listen to someone's advice by their opening line.
In this case "Your having laugh mate"
It just screams "I don't know what I'm talking about.
And what the hell is "owe de resistense "
It's "Pièce de résistance" you muppet.
The whole point of this thread was to get a free and preferably "LEGAL" download.
DVD Shrink and Pocket DixX are not free. Just a limited trial.0 -

why don't you take your head out of you arse and come back down to earth for awhile. you can breath much easier down here.
i got the programs for free and i have a cheap £600 laptop and those times are indeed what it takes me. i may not be a computer geek but i got these progams f.o.c. instead of slagging off everyone, hows about putting something useful in. maybe it just me but i don't feel the need to slag off people on forums, i stand up for my self in real life so i don't feel the need to bully a screen.
p.s don't take it to heart big guyinternet (in ter net), secret sanctuary of idiots and nutters.0 -

my times posted were for ripping to h264 (and ripped at a good quality) not AVI which is why it takes longer than yours
h264 is *much* better quality than AVI/DIVX/XVID hence the longer render times...
I just leave it running overnight anyway
faster doesn't equal better
when you say you got the for free do you mean they came with the computer or you acquired them nefariously - I was trying to give a free, legal and very well respected option.
EDIT: not to mention he asked for an app for ripping to MP4 not AVI...0 -

Prescott core processors are known for being less efficient at doing tasks compared to the Northwood cores (clock for clock with HT enabled, the Northwood, even with it's lower amount of cache, will outperform a Prescott in media encoding tasks) and also the later Core & Core2 processor families. The CoreDuo (not Core2) 1.86GHz notebook (running Vista Ultimate) I am using presently outperforms the family Prescott 3.4GHz (running XP SP2 Pro) in media encoding by upto 45% depending on the format encoding source and output formats.
Nero now support mobile video format encoding within the Premium and Reloaded packages (Recode2) that they do.
There are potential problems when muxing from AVIs (especially with b-frames/B-VOPs/bi-directional encoding) into MP4:
1) "delay frames", caused by the old VFW interface some codecs still use (XviD, DivX5). only when encoding with VirtualDub/Mod these will be automatically dropped when using b-frames
2) "packed bitstream", caused by the old AVI container, which is not really capable of storing b-frames. PB is used in DivX5 (only with 1 consecutive b-frame set) and by default in new XviD builds (make sure the PB option is unticked in XviD) and packs b-frames together with other frames (read a more detailed description about B-frames in AVI here).
3) "userdata", which in the case of XviD and DivX PB streams signals the useage of PB. some decoders take this flag into account while decoding
4) "vol", which is placed on every keyframe in AVI, but has to be seperated from the movie data in MP4
5) "ctts" atom, which has to be written when muxing b-frames into MP4
Currently only the 3ivx mp4 muxer and GPAC's MP4Box handle all these things correctly! Use only them for AVI conversions, especially with packed bitstreams or if you are unsure which b-frame option/encoding app was used. otherwise the chance is great that you will not get a 100% spec compliant MP4 file!0 -

Good job copy and pasting, and not giving credit to good ol' doom9
Oh, and since when was the topic not about ripping to mp4, not muxing? :P
Anyway, I think enough has been said. There isn't a best encoder, end of story, so I'll just keep my mouth shut now!0
