just back into my bikes and need some advice on some future plans! i've got a 2007 gt avalanche and was thinking of upgrading the components (forks brakes gearset etc) is it worth it on this frame(and what would you use on a budget of £600) - i mainly ride xc. or would i be better buying something out of the box? all suggestions welcome - even piss takes at my lack of knowledge! :?

You have a decent frame upon which to upgrade. With £600 you could certainly improve it a lot as well.

A set of Rockshox Rebas for the forks. Some XT brakes and crankset. Some Mavic XC717 on Hope ProII hubs would also be a tasty choice. Some new tyres are a must. If you have any cash left over I would spend it on upgrading contact points like pedals, grips, saddles.

Can I ask what components you already have, and why you need to upgrade so soon?

bog standard - i'm happy with the frame just find the brakes iffy and the fork a bit springy. is the 3 the same frame as the expert? would there be anything better out of the box for a budget of £600 plus whatever i can get for my gt? started to ride good sessions 3-4 times a week so can justify the expensive - guess i'm addicted to bikes again!

Upgrading a new bike does'nt make much financial sense, and you will always get better value for money buying a complete new bike, than upgrading.

For the the price that you would get for your Avalanche plus £600 you could be looking at a very nice hardtail.Take a look at the Rock Lobster 853 or Tig Team, which have full XT and decent handbuilt wheels.Or you will soon be able to get a current model like the Expert reduced,as the new 2008 models come on stream.

Having said that there is something addictive about upgrading, and I have extensively upgraded my own Giant XTC.From my own experience,I can tell you the most noticeable perfomance upgrade I made was to upgrade the forks.

RS rebas are great forks, and you can get them from Merlin cycles for £225.

Tyres made a big difference too,and are a relatively cheap.

In what way are your brakes iffy?It might be just that they need set up properly.

    I would upgrade forks,and wheels/tyres before brakes.
