I just bought an sram chain to fit my 8-speed cassette. However, I suspect that I may need to change the cassette too (will decide on that if the chain starts skipping when it's fitted). My question is: will the 8-speed chain work with a 9-speed cassette should I decide to go with one? or is it too wide? The box claims it's compatible with 8-7-6 speed systems, but is that just the company playing safe? What do you think?

new chain and shifter if you want to run a 9 spd cassette. 8spd and 9 spd stuff is not compatable.

New shifter too? Hadn't thought of that. Then it's outside my comfort zone. Thanks.
