Spoke tinkiling

I have a pair of Bonty Race x Lites from a second hand bike, however there seems to be a tinkiling noise like something is clipping the spokes as I ride it.
The sound only appears when I'm pushing hard.

I then removed the rear cassette to see what was going on and found the cassette had dug into the hub body, I filed down the protruding metal and fitted a new cassette, It still runs fine, just sounds odd.

Any ideas to the problem/solution

Many thanks
Scott

it sounds the sort of noise of spokes that need tightening.
It happens with new wheels that haven't been tensioned properly

it might not be this btw
  • I don't think it is your spoke tension. There is an issue with Bontrager wheels where the spokes rub and make a noise where they cross as the wheel flexes. If you overtighten a spoke on you may do unnecessary damage. A fix that does work is to put a drop of oil at each point that the spokes cross, this should work.

My HED Deep rear wheel made a lot of noise. I traced it to the crossing of the spokes on the drive side. Tension was all OK, etc.

I solved it by inserting a little bit of Mylar tape between the spokes at the contact point. Everything went quiet
Recipe: shave legs sparingly, rub in embrocation and drizzle with freshly squeezed baby oil.
