Missing brake cable

I have Tiagra dual lever shifters (on drop handlebars) and want to replace my brake cables. But can I see where the cable feeds through? No. I depress the levers but can see no sign of the cable end. Any clues?

    have you released the cable at the brake end?
    i have 105 levers and unless the cable is "free" the lever won't move enough to be able to see the end, if not pull the lever right back to the bar then push the cable a bit it should become clear, i find that a torch makes it a bit easier to se what's going on. good luck

    Thanks custom-freak. A torch sounds a good idea and what you say about releasing the cable makes sense.
